Having lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 15 years, I have spent countless weekends hitting the road to explore everything California has to offer. From the foggy coastline of Big Sur to the rolling vineyards of Napa Valley and Paso Robles, I have seen some of the most amazing sunsets and stayed in everything from luxury cliffside hotels to cozy cabins with a hot tub.

If you are looking for the best weekend getaways from SF Bay Area, a short drive can lead to completely different worlds. Whether you are looking for a romantic weekend getaway from SF bay or an outdoor adventure in Yosemite, this travel guide will help you find the perfect place for your next weekend road trip.

Some of my top ideas for a quick escape include wine tasting in Healdsburg, the cliffs of Mendocino or a city break to Santa Barbara. I have personally visited these popular destinations multiple times over the years and I am excited to share my favorite places with you.

Best Weekend Getaways From San Francisco Bay Area

Napa Valley

Welcome to world famous wine growing region Napa Valley Billboard

Napa Valley is the ultimate choice for a polished and luxury couples getaway from the Bay Area. It is home to some of the most famous wines of the world (do not miss the Cabernet tastings) along with amazing fine dining and incredible hotels. As a sommelier, it is my favorite place for a weekend getaway from SF.

What to Do:

Sonoma County

Jacuzzi winery, Sonoma

Sonoma County offers a more laid-back and rustic wine country experience compared to its neighbor, Napa. It is a great place to do informal wine tastings and the scenic Russian River. I love the wineries of Healdsburg and Dry Creek Valley; they are more casual than Napa.

Where to Stay:

  • Farmhouse Inn: A romantic boutique hotel that feels like a cozy, upscale retreat.
  • Vintners Resort: Surrounded by vineyards and perfect for a relaxing weekend.

What to Do:

  • Explore the tasting rooms around the charming Healdsburg plaza.
  • Spend a day floating or kayaking down the Russian River.
  • Hike through the giant sequoias at Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve.
  • Check out something offbeat: Wildlife tour at Safari West in Sonoma. It is fun for kids and adults.

Carmel & Big Sur

Combining Carmel and Big Sur makes a stunning coastal road trip. This area is famous for its dramatic natural beauty, luxury cliffside hotels and the iconic Pacific Coast Highway. A must visit for anyone looking for a coastal escape.

Monterey Bay

Monterey Bay is a favorite for families and nature lovers. It has a rich history centered around Cannery Row and offers some of the best marine life viewing in Northern California. You can also visit Santa Cruz on your way to Monterey.

Where to Stay:

What to Do:

  • Visit the world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium to see the incredible kelp forests and sea creatures.
  • Explore the historic shops and restaurants along Cannery Row.
  • Take the 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach to see iconic coastal views.
  • For something unique, take a whale watching tour.

Santa Barbara

View of Santa Barbara from Courthouse

Santa Barbara is often called the “American Riviera” for its beautiful coastline and Spanish architecture. It is the perfect place for a luxe weekend getaway with a mix of beach time and high-end dining. Santa Barbara also has some of the most colorful Instagram Spots.

Santa Barbara is one of my favorite places to visit for a weekend trip from SF Bay Area and for some reason, not many people visit this amazing city! You can even spend one day in Santa Barbara on your way to Los Angeles from SF.

Hilton beachfront resort Santa Barbara

Where to Stay:

  • Belmond El Encanto: A ultimate luxury hotel perched on a hill with some of the best views of the city and the sea.
  • Ritz-Carlton Bacara: A massive, upscale resort right on the water for the ultimate relaxing weekend.

  • Visit the historic Old Mission Santa Barbara to learn about the rich history of the area.
  • Cruise along the coast on a private boat for a different view of the city.
  • Santa Barbara has some of the most incredible food. Take a walking food tour and enjoy the city.

South Lake Tahoe

Woman in the backdrop of blue crystal clear waters of Lake Tahoe at Sand Harbor beach.

Who in The Bay Area hasn’t visited Lake Tahoe? It is probably the most popular destination of SF Bay residents.

While South Lake Tahoe is the best place for year-round outdoor adventure in the Sierra Nevada mountains, my favorite time to visit is in the summer. There are so many things to do in Lake Tahoe in the summer and it is so fun. I have also seen some of the most amazing sunsets over the water here, whether in the snowy winter or the sunny summer months.

Where to Stay:

The Landing Resort & Spa: A boutique luxury hotel with a great view and easy access to the lake.

Edgewood Tahoe Resort: The premier luxury resort in the area with its own golf course and a stunning lakeside hot tub. My favorite hotel in the area!

The Bistro, Edgewood Resort

  • Did you know there are many other lakes near Lake Tahoe? Visit one of those in addition to Lake Tahoe.
  • Spend a day on the water with a boat rental or check out the north side of the lake.

Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park is one of the most popular destinations in California for its incredible natural beauty. Yosemite Valley is a must-visit for anyone who loves hiking and outdoor activities. It is also one of the best places to visit in California in the winter.

Paso Robles

A woman in a white dress and wide-brimmed hat stands with her back to the camera, sipping wine with a view of the expansive vineyards at Villa San Juliette Vineyards.

Paso Robles is a central California favorite for a relaxed and friendly wine country experience. It amazes me that many people just drive by Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo without stopping even once.

Paso Robles is great for those who want to enjoy quality wine tasting without the rush of Napa or Sonoma. You can also enjoy beer tasting at many breweries and farm to table brunch in Downtown.

Where to Stay:

  • Allegretto Vineyard Resort: A beautiful and upscale resort that feels like a Mediterranean villa. This is my favorite spot for a relaxing and chill getaway.
  • The Piccolo: A boutique hotel located right on the main street with a chic rooftop bar.

What to Do:

  • Explore the unique tasting rooms and local shops around the historic Downtown.
  • Visit Sensorio to see the “Field of Light” art installation during the evening. This is stunning!
  • Spend a day driving through the scenic hills for wine tasting at boutique family-owned and best wineries of Paso Robles. Some of my favorite are Tablas Creek, Niner and Daou.
  • If you have time, visit the unique and hidden Hearst Castle in San Simeon. You will not find a castle like this elsewhere in California, it is fascinating.

Mendocino & Fort Bragg

Mendocino Headlands State Park

Mendocino and Fort Bragg offer rugged Northern California beauty and a rich history. These coastal towns are perfect for a quiet weekend of exploring beautiful beaches and scenic state parks.

You can easily do a road trip from San Francisco to Mendocino on a weekend. It is so peaceful here that you wouldn’t want to leave.

Where to Stay:

What to Do:

  • Visit Glass Beach in Fort Bragg to see the shore covered in colorful sea glass.
  • Take a walk through the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens to see beautiful plants right by the ocean.
  • Hike along the bluffs at Mendocino Headlands State Park for spectacular sea views.

San Diego

San Diego Museum of Art

San Diego is a longer road trip from the San Francisco Bay Area, but it is a great place for a 3 day weekend trip. It is also my favorite city in California so I had to include it in the list. It offers beautiful beaches and a vibrant, diverse city vibe that feels like a true vacation.

I have been to San Diego countless time now and there is something new to discover every trip.

Where to Stay:

Hotel del Coronado: An iconic and historic hotel located right on the beach with a classic red roof.

A soft pink and purple sunset over the sandy beach, with the historic Hotel del Coronado standing grandly in the background.

  • Visit the Elephant Seal Overlook at Point Reyes to see the massive colonies on the beach.
  • Check out the Point Reyes Shipwreck and Cypress tree tunnel while you are there.

Half Moon Bay

Hotel Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay on a bluff

Half Moon Bay is a quick coastal escape just a short drive from the San Francisco Bay Area. It is the perfect place for a day trip or an overnight stay to enjoy the beautiful coastline and local farms. Do note that this area can get super cold and windy even in the summer. I already forget to dress up in layers and regret it later.

Where to Stay:

What to Do:

  • Walk or bike along the scenic Coastal Trail for miles of ocean views.
  • Visit one of the local farms to pick pumpkins in the fall or enjoy fresh produce in the summer months.
  • Explore the tide pools at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve to see a variety of marine life.

Mt. Shasta

Snow capped mountain rising above a tree lined ridge with a paved road curving through the foreground under a clear blue sky. The scene shows the mountain framed by scrubby hills and conifers along the horizon.

Mt. Shasta is my Northern California favorite for its raw natural beauty and spiritual vibes. The 14,000 foot peak towers over the town and offers some of the most breathtaking mountain views in the state.

Mt. Shasta is unique because it is the only mountain in the area unlike other mountain ranges so it pops in the background. If you want peaceful views with less crowds, this is a great weekend trip from San Francisco. I’ve been exploring this area even before many people in social media knew about it.

Where to Stay:

What to Do:

  • Hike the Heart Lake Trail for a classic reflection of Mt. Shasta in the alpine water.
  • Explore the waterfalls at Hedge Creek Falls where you can actually walk behind the cascading water.
  • Drive up to Bunny Flat for the best sunset views and easy access to high-elevation trails.

Sequoia National Park

Looking up through a dense forest of tall evergreen trees with golden sunlight filtering through the canopy. Sunbeams glow between the trunks and highlight mossy bark and deep green foliage.

Sequoia National Park is home to the largest trees on Earth and deep mountain canyons. It is an incredible place for those who want to feel small among the giant sequoias in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Where to Stay:

  • Wuksachi Lodge: The park’s premier lodge located right in the heart of the forest.

What to Do:

  • Walk the Congress Trail to stand before the General Sherman Tree, the largest single-stem tree by volume on earth.
  • Climb the Moro Rock for a panoramic view of the Great Western Divide.
  • Drive your car through a fallen giant at Tunnel Log for a unique California road trip photo.

Pismo Beach & Morro Bay

A white GMC vehicle drives along the sandy shores of Pismo State Beach under a cloudy sky, with faint tire tracks visible and seagulls flying near the ocean.

Morro Bay and Pismo Beach are Central California icons known for their dramatic landscapes and massive sand dunes. This area is a great place for wildlife viewing and enjoying a laid-back coastal atmosphere.

Where to Stay:

  • Vespara Resort & Spa: An oceanfront resort in Pismo Beach with spacious suites and a luxury spa.
  • Inn at the Cove: A secluded hotel perched on a cliff with private balconies overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Morro Bay

What to Do:

  • Kayak in the Morro Bay harbor to get a closer look at Morro Rock and the local sea otters.
  • Drive your car out onto the sand at the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area.
  • Walk along the Pismo Beach Pier for some of the best sunset views on the central coast. Check out the monarch butterflies at the monarch butterfly grove in the winter.

There are other weekend getaways that are doable from Bay Area like Mono & June Lakes, Palm Springs, Clear Lake and Death Valley National Park but they are a bit far and are worth it if you plan for a 3 or 4 day weekend.

Final Thoughts

After living in the Bay Area for over 15 years, I can honestly say we are spoiled for choice. I have spent countless weekends watching the sunset over the Pacific Ocean and I never get tired of it. Whether I am exploring the boutique shops in Santa Barbara or enjoying a slow afternoon in a Paso Robles tasting room, each trip feels like a brand new outdoor adventure.

Whether it is exploring the massive sand dunes at Pismo Beach or discovering a quiet spot along the rocky bluffs in Fort Bragg or exploring the beautiful almond blossoms or lavender farms of NorCal there is always something new to discover just a few hours away. I hope this list helps you plan your next perfect place to escape for the weekend.
