I spent a week in Lake Como, and it was an unforgettable experience. Exploring the towns and villages around the lake, I got a real sense of what makes each place special. From the charming streets of Bellagio to the picturesque views in Varenna and the vibrant atmosphere in Menaggio, I’ve seen it all. This is my guide to the best towns in Lake Como area, what to do in each town, where to stay all based on firsthand knowledge. Whether you’re planning a visit or just curious, these are the most charming towns in Lake Como area that you won’t want to miss!

Lake Como in the Lombardy region of Italy is known for its beautiful scenery, elegant villas and quaint villages. It is one of the best Italian lakes and a short drive from Milan. To make your planning easier, I have listed the best of towns in Lake Como and the highlights of each!

It is easy to see why Bellagio is the most famous town in Lake Como. Bellagio, known as the “Pearl of Lake Como,” offers spectacular views, charming streets, and plenty of things to do. Its central location on the lake makes it a great base for exploring. You can wander through its narrow, cobblestone streets, enjoy delicious Italian food, and admire the beautiful architecture. It is probably the best Lake Como towns to visit if you are short of time.

  • Stroll through the beautiful gardens of Villa Melzi.
  • Walk through the most popular street of Lake Como, Salita Serbelloni. This is also one of the best Instagram spots in Lake Como.

The lakeside views are amazing and it is laid back with authentic Italian charm. You can enjoy a peaceful walk along the waterfront or visit the most beautiful villas with great botanical gardens.

Varenna has lots to see and is perfect place to experience the charm of Lake Como. I loved Varenna so much, we saw the most beautiful sunset, had a delicious meal and enjoyed a leisurely stroll along the promenade. It is the prettiest town in Lake Como area in my opinion and make it part of your Lake Como itinerary.

Menaggio, on the western shore of Lake Como, is one of my favorite towns in Lake Como. The town’s lakeside promenade is perfect for a leisurely walk, and there are plenty of cafes and shops to explore. There are plenty of things to do in Menaggio and it also offers great opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking and boating. Its central location makes it an ideal base for exploring other parts of the lake. Whether you stay in Bellagio or Varenna, a visit to Menaggio is a must. It is one of the major towns in Lago di Como area and in my opinion, one of the best towns in Lake Como.

Tremezzo is a picturesque town in Lake Como and one of my favorite towns. This is where we stayed and loved the small town yet luxurious vibe. It is home to the famous Villa Carlotta, with its beautiful gardens and art collections as well as the most famous hotel in Lake Como – Grand Hotel Tremezzo. Tremezzo has a relaxed vibe, with plenty of cafes and restaurants along the waterfront. It is across the lake from Bellagio and 10 minute bus ride/drive from Menaggio.

Como City or the Town of Como is a vibrant town in Lake Como. It is the transportation hub and the largest town in Lake Como with rich history, lively atmosphere, and stunning lakefront views.

It is a great starting point for exploring the lake, with plenty of shops, restaurants, and cafes to enjoy. The town’s historic architecture, including the impressive Como Cathedral and the medieval city walls are incredible.

Lenno is one of the smaller towns but a must visit town in Lake Como as it is home to the most famous Villa. Villa del Balbianello, a stunning villa often featured in films like James Bond, Star Wars is in Lenno and is an absolutely stunning place to visit. The villa also has amazing views of the lake. Visiting this villa is one of the best things to do in Lake Como area. Lenno’s weekly market is a great place to experience local culture and cuisine.

With its scenic surroundings and peaceful atmosphere, Nesso is a great place to explore and relax.

Cernobbio is a popular town in Lake Como due to its proximity to Como City and its beautiful waterfront promenade. Cernobbio is home to the famous Villa d’Este, a luxurious hotel and garden that is amazing and worth a visit. If you are staying in Como city, I highly recommend visiting Cernobbio and Villa d’Este. We visited Villa d’Este for lunch and it was a wonderful experience.

With opulent rooms, beautiful gardens, multiple restaurants, and stunning lake views, it is one of the best hotels to stay in Lake Como.. The service and amenities are top-notch, making it a perfect choice for a lavish stay. If you are planning to stay in Cernobbio, you have got to stay in Villa d’Este.

Bellano is another great town to visit in Lake Comoif you love dramatic landscape and nature. It iss a bit off the beaten path but very close to Varenna. The town has a lively waterfront with cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy local cuisine and the beautiful views. Its mix of natural beauty and authentic charm makes Bellano an incredible town to explore.
