Summer in Europe is easily one of the most exciting things to do. There is something about the long days and Mediterranean sun that just hits different. I have spent four of the last six summers in Europe and it is truly my favorite place in the world.

Europe is so fun to travel because all the countries are close to each other. You can literally have lunch in Italy, dinner in Switzerland and wake up in Germany! I have traveled extensively through the Mediterranean, Italy since 2017 and even ended up leading a group of lost tourists when our flight landed in a different city once.

From spending a month slow traveling the French Riviera to two months wandering from the Netherlands to Vienna and Portugal last year, I have personally been to almost every spot on this European summer bucket list (except two).

Having done road trips across countries, island hopping and road trips, I know exactly where you should spend your summer in Europe. If you are looking for crystal-clear waters, historic sites and memorable escapes, keep reading.

The Best European Summer Destinations

Lake Como, Italy

Colorful homes of Varenna from Lake Como
Colorful homes of Varenna viewed from Lake Como

Lake Como is easily one of my favorite places in Northern Italy for a nice European summer holiday. It is less crowded than the Amalfi Coast and has a very sophisticated, elegant vibe. You can easily spend a few days in Lake Como on your way to Milan or Zurich and make it a Northern Italy itinerary.

When in Lake Como, I love visiting the villas, taking the ferry rides and evening walks with a gelato in hand. Ferries are the best way to see the colorful small towns like Bellagio and Varenna. I also loved the smaller Tremezzo and more rustic Menaggio. My absolute favorite thing to do is taking a private boat tour of Lake Como.

If you can, visit Lake Como in late August or early September. The weather is warm and sunny but there are fewer tourists. Fewer tourists means you can have great photos to capture all the Instagram spots in Lake Como.

If you are traveling with kids, Lake Como is a great destination. Check out my 2 day Lake Como itinerary to plan your trip.

Where to Stay in Lake Como:

Cinque Terre and Portofino, Italy

The colorful cliffside village of Manarola in Cinque Terre overlooks turquoise waters and rugged rocks dotted with visitors.
Colorful village of Manarola, Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre and Portofino are the crown jewels of the Italian Riviera. While Cinque Terre is famous for its five colorful fishing villages connected by hiking trails and trains, Portofino is its more glamorous, upscale neighbor.

Both areas offer stunning views of the Ligurian Sea, but they have very different vibes. Between Portofino or Cinque Terre, if you want a more romantic and less crowded experience, I highly recommend staying in Portofino like I did.

An elevated view of Portofino’s harbor shows pastel buildings, boats, and lush green hills wrapping around turquoise water.
Portofino, Italy

Portofino is much quieter than the main towns of Cinque Terre and feels incredibly exclusive. While everyone else is fighting for a spot in more crowded areas, you can enjoy a relaxed pace here. Getting to Portofino from Milan or Florence requires a bit of planning but it is so worth it!

I loved visiting the nearby towns like Santa Margherita Ligure and Camogli. It is the perfect place for a stroll and authentic dining.

From Portofino, you can easily take a day trip to Cinque Terre to see those iconic vertical villages.

Where to Stay in Portofino:

  • Belmond Hotel Splendido: This is the most ICONIC place to stay in Portofino with the most breathtaking views of the harbor. Note that it is only open in the summer.
  • Eight Hotel Portofino: A beautiful boutique option that offers a more intimate and quiet luxury experience.

Amalfi Coast, Italy

View of Positano, Italy
The iconic vertical village of Positano

The Amalfi Coast is easily one of my favorite places on earth; I truly left my heart there. It is exactly what you imagine a Mediterranean paradise would look like.

With steep cliffs, colorful vertical villages and dazzling turquoise waters, Amalfi Coast feels like heaven on earth. If I had to choose between Lake Como or the Amalfi Coast, the Amalfi Coast is definitely my favorite because it is just so special.

Amalfi Coast really has everything: world-class beach clubs, some of the best towns like Positano and those breathtaking terraced views in Ravello that look like heaven on earth.

Villa Cimbrone gardens, Ravello
Villa Cimbrone, Ravello

Whether you are sipping limoncello under lemon groves, taking a private boat tour to the Island of Capri or exploring the hidden grottos, the vibe here is vibrant and lively. And whether you plan 3 days or 5 days in the Amalfi Coast, it is an absolute must-visit European bucket list destination.

What’s better than spending summer months by the sea and Amalfi Coast is one of the best coastal destinations!

Where to Stay in Amalfi Coast:

  • Le Sirenuse, Positano: This is the most iconic hotel in Positano. It is famous for its breathtaking bay views and luxury. If you are deciding between Amalfi and Positano for your stay, I suggest Positano for exclusivity and Amalfi for easier access.
  • Hotel Santa Caterina, Amalfi: A stunning hotel if you want beautiful architecture, panoramic views and your own private beach club set right into the rocks.
  • Belmond Hotel Caruso, Ravello: Located in a restored 11th-century palace, this hotel has unparalleled views of the sea and some of the most beautiful terraced gardens you will ever see.

Barcelona and Costa Brava, Spain

Barcelona gothic quarter streets

I have been to Barcelona thrice now. While I loved exploring the city in three days during the my first visit, I have realized the real magic is in the Costa Brava.

Barcelona is unbeatable for chic shopping, the incredible genius of Gaudi’s architecture, the amazing food and that vibrant city energy.

But if you want a true road trip experience with stunning sea views and hidden coves, you have to head north of the city to Costa Brava. Costa Brava is easily one of the best weekend trips from Barcelona.

Scenic view of Costa Brava, a popular destination for a quick weekend trip from Barcelona, highlighting the ease of travel and beauty of the nearby getaway

The best way to see the Costa Brava is to rent a car and drive along the rugged coastline or take the train for those perfect Mediterranean panoramic views. You can find everything here from ancient medieval villages like Tossa de Mar, Cadaqués and Cap de Creus to pristine sandy beaches.

I personally love the coastal walks overlooking the crystal-clear waters. It is the perfect place to experience a classic European summer away from the main tourist mass.

There are so many things to do in Barcelona and Costa Brava along with amazing incredible Instagram spots that you would want to come back.

Where to Stay:

  • Majestic Hotel & Spa, Barcelona: This is my top pick for Barcelona. It is located right on Passeig de Gràcia and offers that timeless, old-world luxury with a rooftop pool that has the best views of the city and the Sagrada Família.
  • Hostal de La Gavina, S’Agaró: This is arguably the best luxury hotel on the Costa Brava. It is a historic site in its own right and has hosted celebrities for decades. It is set on a stunning peninsula with direct access to two beautiful beaches.
  • Le Meridien, Las Ramblas: If you want to stay close to the old town in the center of Barcelona, this is the best hotel to stay. It is very central yet tucked away and quiet.

Tuscany, Italy

DSC 0015 2

Tuscany is my favorite place to slow down and experience true Italian hospitality. Imagine quintessential rolling hills and cypress trees that you see on every postcard.

As a sommelier, this region is a complete wine lover’s paradise for me. I have explored everything from the big major cities like Florence and Siena to the small towns of Tuscan countryside in Val d’Orcia and all the best wine regions and wineries of Tuscany.

If you are planning to see Tuscany in a week, start your trip with a few days in Florence and then stay at an agriturismo in Val d’Orcia (a traditional farmhouse stay). It is the best way to soak in the rustic charm and enjoy local flavors right at the source. Or just base in Florence and take day trips to the Tuscan countryside.

DSC 0075 2
Wine town of Montepulciano

I love wandering through the famous wine towns of Montalcino and Montepulciano – the wines of these regions are so good. You must try the Brunello di Montalcino. It is the most famous wine of Italy.

Whether you are foraging for the best truffles in the forest or taking a road trip through the golden hills, Tuscany is a place that feels like a warm hug. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site for a reason and definitely deserves a spot on your European summer bucket list. I feel like many people just visit Florence but Tuscan countryside is a must add to everyone’s Italy itinerary IMO.

Where to Stay:

  • Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco: This is one of the most elite estate stays in the world, located right in the heart of the Val d’Orcia. It is perfect for those seeking ultimate luxury and incredible wine experiences.
  • Belmond Castello di Casole: A stunning historic site that has been transformed into a luxury hotel. It is surrounded by vineyards and offers some of the most panoramic views in the entire region.
  • Sce Queric: If you want that iconic “Tuscan dream” agriturismo stay with homemade breakfasts and amazing views, this is the right place for an authentic and peaceful experience.

Lucerne and Interlaken, Switzerland

A historic wooden covered bridge lined with colorful flowers stretches over calm water as two swans swim below at sunset. This romantic European city scene embodies classic Europe bucket list experiences.

As someone who had no idea what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised by Lucerne. It is such a cute town and a perfect base to explore the Alps without feeling like you are in the middle of nowhere.

If you love alpine adventures, this is the place to visit. My husband even went skydiving in the Alps here (I can’t in my wildest dreams)! Between the lake cruises and the easy mountain access, it is a great spot to enjoy dramatic landscapes.

Interlaken is just a short trip away and is the gateway to the Swiss Alps. It is the best place to base yourself if you want to hike the big peaks.

A turquoise lake sits beside a stone building with a steep hillside and forest rising behind it under a bright blue sky. The peaceful waterfront scene highlights scenic European summer destinations in the Alps.

Whether you are into high-adrenaline sports or just want to sit by a turquoise lake with a view, you really cannot go wrong here. It is a special place that feels a world away from the busy Mediterranean but I still loved it here.

Where to Stay:

Vienna, Austria

A grand historic building with a domed roof stands behind manicured green hedges and a large bronze statue in a city park. The elegant architecture represents cultural highlights often included on a Europe bucket list.

Vienna – the city of art, culture and music and my daughter’s favorite destination. Vienna feels like the city still living in the past and that is exactly what I loved about it too.

It is such a fun place for both kids and adults because you can really immerse yourself in the history and culture. We had the most incredible experience staying at the Rosewood Vienna, which is actually located in a 19th-century building where Mozart once lived.

A white horse drawn carriage passes boutique storefronts with decorative facades and tall windows along a stylish European shopping street. The historic setting reflects timeless European summer destinations in an old town district.

We spent our days playing with 17th-century toys at Schonbrunn Palace, listened to a concert where Mozart once played and even conducted our own (virtual) orchestra at the House of Music!

Whether you are exploring the imperial history at the palaces or getting lost in the music and museums, Vienna is a European destination that truly feels like a step back in time (and a favorite of old souls like me).

Where to Stay in Vienna:

  • Rosewood Vienna: Housed in a beautifully restored historic building (where Mozart once lived), this hotel offers modern amenities right in the heart of the Old Town. It is the perfect blend of grandeur and local artistry.
  • Hotel Sacher Vienna: For a quintessential Viennese experience, you cannot beat the Sacher. They are experts at pampering young travelers with their “Petit Sacher” program and their family suites are incredibly spacious and elegant.

French Riviera, France

A cliffside village with terracotta rooftops overlooks a brilliant blue sea and rugged coastline below. This dramatic coastal view captures the magic of Mediterranean European summer destinations.

I spent a month last summer exploring the Côte d’Azur and Provence and it was the best thing ever. This region is a diverse continent in itself and you can easily spend your whole summer here.

If you are staying for more than a week, I suggest having two bases. Stay in a place like Aix-en-Provence to see the lavender fields and small towns of Luberon and another week in the Riviera like Nice or Cannes.

A narrow cobblestone alley framed by rustic stone buildings leads toward a small arched doorway and gallery sign. The charming old town setting adds timeless appeal to a Europe bucket list itinerary.

My personal favorite in Côte d’Azur was Antibes. It is less flashy, super accessible and also centrally located between Nice and Cannes. There are so many things to do like visiting all the small towns, but my favorite part of the day was going to the fresh farm markets and spending the evenings by the beach.

There is nothing like enjoying local cheese and olives by the pool or beach after a morning of exploring the French Riviera.

Where to Stay:

  • Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, Antibes: This is the ultimate bucket list hotel. It is probably the most famous spot on the French Riviera and is perfect for a splurge.
  • Villa Gallici, Aix-en-Provence: A beautiful place to base yourself in Provence. It feels like a private estate and the gardens are incredible.
  • Hotel Negresco, Nice: A historic site in its own right located right on the Promenade des Anglais. It is iconic and full of art.

Paris, France

IMG 6568 2

You really cannot go wrong with Paris. It is one of my favorite cities in the world and I might just go back again this summer. From the shopping on Avenue Montaigne to those iconic views of the Eiffel Tower, it is a city where you slow down and indulge.

This is where we got used to Michelin 3-star dining and the meaning of real luxury. Whether you are wandering through the Louvre or just sitting at a sidewalk café, the energy is unmatched.

Paris is the perfect place to experience high-end travel at its best. You can spend a morning looking at incredible artworks and then spend the entire afternoon boutique shopping in Le Marais.

Paris in the summer has a lively energy and there is nothing like watching the Eiffel tower sparkle at night with a glass of champagne in hand.

Where to Stay:

  • Hôtel Plaza Athénée: This is the ultimate splurge. It is iconic for its red awnings, Eiffel Tower views and incredible service.
  • Four Seasons Hotel George V: A true Parisian palace. The floral arrangements alone are worth a visit and it is home to three different Michelin-starred restaurants. It is also where we enjoyed a taste of fine Michelin dining.
  • Cheval Blanc Paris: For something modern and incredibly chic, stay here. The rooftop views of the Seine and Notre-Dame are some of the best in the city.

Lisbon, Portugal

A woman in a red dress walks toward a monumental white arch framed by yellow buildings and patterned mosaic pavement. The sunny plaza scene captures the vibrant atmosphere of European summer destinations.

Lisbon is a colorful city full of life. It is the kind of place that stays with you. I still remember the time my daughter danced her heart away to street music at 10 pm or the quiet moments we spent having lemon sorbetto by the water.

The seafood here is incredible and the city has such energy that stays with you.

Lisbon is also a perfect base for exploring further. You can easily do day trips to multiple small towns like Sintra, where you will find the most colorful palaces or the beach town of Cascais.

In Lisbon itself, explore the historic center, the maze-like streets of Alfama and definitely grab a box of Pastéis de Belém.

Whether you are taking a tuk-tuk tour or watching the sunset from a miradouro, Lisbon is a special place that offers a little bit of everything.

Where to Stay:

  • Four Seasons Hotel Lisbon: This is a world-class hotel near Eduardo VII Park. It offers stately accommodations and is a great retreat for families who want traditional luxury and a super safe environment.
  • Martinhal Lisbon Chiado: If you want to be right in the heart of the historic center with kids, this is exceptional. It is designed specifically for families with spacious suites and a kids club.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

A vibrant bed of tulips in shades of yellow, white, and pink stands in sharp focus in the foreground, with a blurred backdrop of canal houses and boats along a river in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam is a city break that truly hits its peak in the summer months. Summer is the best season to explore the city on bike and you will find tulips blooming in window boxes all over the city.

It is a place where history is around every corner, with incredible museums like the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. But for me, the best way to experience the city is through the canals.

There is nothing like cruising the historic canals on a boat tour to see the 17th-century architecture from a different angle. Another favorite is sitting in a cafe and just people watching with a coffee.

Spend your morning at a historic site like the Anne Frank House and the afternoon wandering through the floating flower market, the Bloemenmarkt and evening enjoying the nightlife.

Where to Stay:

  • Pulitzer Amsterdam: This is my absolute favorite for luxury travelers. It is set within 25 interlinked canal houses and they even have their own classic boat, The Tourist, for private canal cruises.
  • Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht: A whimsically designed lifestyle hotel on one of the city’s canals. They offer free bicycles and Sunday bike tours, which is the best way to explore like a local.

Istanbul, Turkey

A glowing mosque with tall minarets lights up the night skyline as a hand holds a small glass of tea in the foreground. The illuminated cityscape captures a magical evening travel moment in Istanbul.

Istanbul had been on my bucket list (and vision board) for so long and we finally checked it off last year. It is such a cool city and has a different feel to other European cities!

Istanbul’s history is as old as Rome but it feels much more colorful, energetic and full of grand bazaars. My daughter absolutely loved it; it was her favorite city of all the ones we visited last year.

One of the best things about Istanbul is the Mediterranean vibe mixed with something totally unique. It is a mix of Christianity and Islam, a bridge between Asia and Europe. You have the calls to prayer echoing over the skyline, the rooftop views and of course, the cats! They are everywhere and so well-loved by the locals and a huge hit for us.

We spent our days wandering through the Sultanahmet district to see the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia but our favorite moments were taking the boat ride between Europe and Asia and rooftop dining with views.

Istanbul is the only city in the world where you can cross continents for the price of a local boat ride. How cool is that?

Where to Stay:

  • Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet: This is a total dream, especially for families. It is a restored century-old prison right in the heart of the Old City. The service is world-class and being steps away from the Hagia Sophia is unbeatable.
  • Çırağan Palace Kempinski: If you want to feel like royalty, stay here. It is an actual Ottoman imperial palace right on the Bosphorus. The infinity pool overlooking the water is one of the most beautiful spots in the city.
  • AJWA Sultanahmet: This is another gem in Sultanahmet and is great to explore the old city by foot.

Seville and Andalusia, Spain

Woman in a gingham dress sitting on the colorful tiled benches at Plaza de España in Seville, surrounded by curved colonnades and historic towers.

Since I read the book The Alchemist, I have been dreaming of visiting this magical place and I finally made it happen a few years ago. Andalusia is so different from rest of the Spain; the Moorish influences, the soul-stirring flamenco and the culture make it feel truly unique.

I spent three days in Seville including day trips to Córdoba to see the Mezquita but I honestly wish we had spent more time there. I cannot wait to go back and explore more of the region.

Seville itself is full of life. You have to visit the Seville Cathedral and the Royal Alcázar, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site and absolutely stunning.

One of my favorite things to do was just wander through the Barrio Santa Cruz neighborhood. It is the best place to get lost in narrow streets and find hidden tapas bars.

Where to Stay:

  • Hotel Alfonso XIII, Seville: This is one of the most prestigious hotels in Spain. It was built for the King and is the ultimate place to stay if you want to feel like royalty in a historic palace.
  • Hotel Palacio de Villapanés: A beautiful converted 18th-century palace that combines traditional Andalusian architecture with modern luxury. It has a stunning courtyard that is perfect for escaping the afternoon sun.

Venice, Italy

Golden sunset reflects across a Venetian canal as a gondolier rows past historic buildings and silhouetted domes. The glowing evening light captures a magical moment during a Venice itinerary.

Venice truly is the city of romance and was such a surprise in a good way when I first visited. It is easily one of the most romantic cities in the world with its winding canals and historic villas.

I have visited Venice for several days as part of my Italy itineraries and I think it is actually a great introduction to the country. It is a very walkable city where the best thing you can do is just wander and get lost in the labyrinth of alleyways.

You cannot visit Venice without taking a romantic gondola ride. It is a classic for a reason and the views from the water are just different.

A woman in a white dress stands on a small arched bridge over a canal framed by pastel buildings with green shutters and flower boxes. The romantic city setting embodies classic European summer travel in a charming old town.

Venice is also a perfect base for day trips to nearby islands like Murano for glass-blowing or Burano for its colorful houses (or a trip to Verona).

Whether you are wandering in St. Mark’s Square at night or enjoying a coffee at the historic Caffè Florian, Venice has a magical energy that stays with you long after you leave.

Where to Stay:

  • Hotel Danieli: This is easily one of the most iconic luxury hotels in Venice. The lobby alone is a historic site and the views over the lagoon are exactly what you see in the movies.
  • The Gritti Palace: Located right on the Grand Canal, this hotel is a living piece of history. It is a splurge but having lunch on their famous terrace is one of the best things you can do in the city.

Douro Valley, Portugal

A winding river curves between terraced green hills and vineyards under a blue sky with scattered clouds. The sweeping landscape reflects iconic European summer travel through wine regions and countryside valleys.

The Douro Valley is easily one of the most picturesque wine regions in the world. It is the kind of place where you can spend your days sipping Port while overlooking terraced vineyards that drop straight into the river.

I personally loved the slower pace here compared to Lisbon. Since the region is quite hilly, the best way to see it is by boat cruise or private tours. Also, the train ride from Porto is iconic and offers some of the best sea and river views you will ever see.

If you are a wine lover, this is your paradise. You can visit the famous quintas (wine estates) for tastings, take a private rabelo boat cruise at sunset or just enjoy a long, lazy lunch on a terrace.

I highly recommend spending at least a few nights here to truly soak in the tranquility. It is a special place where the air just feels fresher and the wine tastes better because of the view.

Where to Stay:

  • Six Senses Douro Valley: This is the ultimate luxury retreat. It is a 19th-century manor house with a incredible spa and an infinity pool that has the most panoramic views of the valley.
  • The Vintage House Hotel, Pinhão: Located right on the riverfront in the heart of the wine region, this historic hotel is perfect if you want to be within walking distance of the best wineries and boat tours.

Sardinia, Italy

Crystal clear turquoise water stretches along a rocky shoreline with lush greenery and a mountain rising in the distance. The peaceful beach view reflects idyllic European summer travel along a scenic coastline.

Sardinia is easily one of the best summer destinations in Europe if you want that perfect Mediterranean vibe without it being as hot or busy as Sicily. The crystal-clear waters of Sardinia are some of the most pristine I have ever seen.

If you want to experience a bit of French charm, you can hop over to Corsica on a boat tour. Whether you are lounging on sandy beaches or exploring the rugged interior, Sardinia is a special place that feels much more laid back.

I personally love the Costa Smeralda for its glamorous beach clubs and stunning coastline. The water is so blue it almost looks fake! It is the right place for anyone who wants a mix of luxury and natural beauty.

Where to Stay:

  • Hotel Cala di Volpe: This is one of the most iconic hotels on the Costa Smeralda. It feels like a charming village and has incredible views of the turquoise bay.
  • Hotel Pitrizza: A perfect choice if you want total privacy and luxury. The rooms are built into the natural rock and it has a beautiful private beach.

Mallorca, Spain

A hidden turquoise cove surrounded by rocky cliffs and pine trees with swimmers enjoying the clear water. This secluded beach scene showcases unforgettable European summer destinations along the Mediterranean coast.

Mallorca is a Mediterranean gem that truly comes alive in the summer. The water here is crystal-clear and perfect for boat trips to hidden coves.

It is a special island that offers a bit of everything from historic sites and small towns to some of the most beautiful sandy beaches in Europe.

Quick tip: If you have extra time, you can visit the other Balearic islands from Mallorca. You can take a ferry and be in Menorca in about an hour and explore its pristine coves. You can also hop on a ferry from Palma to Ibiza (which takes about 2-3 hours) to experience the historic Dalt Vila or its famous sunset beach clubs.

Whether you are exploring the narrow streets of Palma or doing a road trip through olive groves, Mallorca is the perfect hub for a Balearic summer.

Where to Stay:

  • Belmond La Residencia, Deià: This is arguably the most beautiful hotel on the island. It is a cluster of 16th-century manor houses with spectacular views of the mountains and the sea.
  • Cap Rocat: A former military fortress that has been transformed into the most exclusive luxury hotel. It is carved into the rocks and offers unparalleled privacy and panoramic views of the bay.

Madeira, Portugal

A dramatic coastal cliff covered in lush greenery drops into the ocean with a thin waterfall cascading down to the rocky shore. The rugged landscape showcases the wild beauty of European summer destinations.

Madeira is one of the places on this list that I am yet to visit but at the very top of my bucket list! If you want to be surrounded by secluded and pristine nature with nothing but fresh air, this is the island you want to be.

It is a paradise for adventurous types with endless hiking trails and lush forests along steep cliffs. Unlike some of the more crowded major cities, Madeira offers a rugged, natural beauty that is totally untouched.

I can already imagine the panoramic views from the peaks and the refreshing feel of the Atlantic breeze.

Where to Stay:

  • Belmond Reid’s Palace: This is the ultimate historic site when it comes to hotels in Madeira. It is perched on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic and has hosted everyone from Winston Churchill to royalty.
  • The Savoy Palace: For something more modern and incredibly grand, this is a beautiful place. The rooftop pool and spa are world-class and offer some of the best views of Funchal.

The Greek Islands

Whitewashed buildings line a calm turquoise harbor under a bright blue sky with soft clouds. The coastal village scene captures the charm of European summer destinations along the Mediterranean.

Greece is always the first country that comes to mind when I think of the Mediterranean. Greek Islands are the essence of Euro summer. There are so many islands to choose from – each with its own distinct personality.

If you are looking for those iconic, postcard-perfect destinations you see everywhere, choose Santorini and Mykonos.

Santorini is unmatched for its famous sunsets over the caldera, while Mykonos is the ultimate hub for high-energy beach clubs and chic, upscale nightlife.

However, if you are looking for something a bit different and more expansive, Crete is a fantastic option. It has everything from the pink sands of Elafonisi to ancient ruins.

For a more authentic and laid-back vibe, Naxos and Paros are the best places. Naxos is wonderful for its endless sandy beaches and incredible local food, while Paros strikes a perfect balance with its traditional whitewashed villages and trendy boutiques.

Whether you want a romantic escape or a family adventure, the Greek islands are the ultimate European summer destinations.

Where to Stay:

The Turkish Riviera

Crystal clear turquoise sea surrounds rocky cliffs with hazy mountains in the distance along a Mediterranean coastline. This serene coastal view captures the beauty of European summer destinations perfect for a relaxing seaside escape.

If you prefer something different from the typical Italian, Greek or French side of the Mediterranean Sea, The Turkish Riviera, also known as the Turquoise Coast, is the perfect destination.

The Turkish Riviera has a completely different energy than the Mediterranean coast of France or Italy. It feels like a true bridge between two worlds.

Whether you are exploring the bustling old town of Antalya (Kaleiçi) with its Roman gates or heading to the ultra-chic Bodrum, the scenery is just breathtaking.

One of my favorite things about this region is how history is integrated into the landscape. You can swim in a turquoise bay one minute and hike 2,000-year-old rock tombs the next.

For a truly unique experience, you have to spend a day on a Gulet (a traditional wooden sailing boat). Cruising along the coast, stopping at secluded coves and enjoying a fresh Turkish lunch on deck is a true Mediterranean experience.

Where to Stay:

  • The Bodrum EDITION: This is the place to see and be seen. It’s incredibly chic with a minimalist Mediterranean vibe, an exclusive beach club and some of the best sunset views in Bodrum.
  • Maxx Royal Kemer Resort, Antalya: If you want absolute luxury, this is it. It has a massive private bay, Michelin-starred dining and personal butlers who make sure every detail of your stay is perfect.

Final Thoughts

For me, Europe is the best place to be in summer. I love that it is so diverse with mountains and alpine views of Northern Europe to Michelin-starred dinners in Paris and quiet mornings by the Mediterranean.

As someone who explored the streets of Paris, Rome, Barcelona to the coastal towns of Amalfi Coast, French Riviera, Cinque Terre, the hiking trails of Alps to the islands of Sardinia, Capri, Mallorca, these are my favorite places to visit for a European summer vacation.

Here is a summary of your favorite destinations categorized by the vibe they offer and honestly, any one of these would be awesome for your Euro summer vacation.

Romantic Escapes

For the ultimate romantic vibes, Venice, the Amalfi Coast and Lake Como are the best. These places are defined by iconic waterfront views, private boat rides and that quintessential Mediterranean paradise feel.

If you want exclusivity with fewer crowds, Portofino is great. It offers a refined, quiet luxury that makes it the perfect base for exploring the Italian Riviera.

For somewhere other than Italy, look no further than Paris, the city of love and Santorini.

Adventure And Nature

If you are looking for adrenaline and breathtaking landscapes, Interlaken and Madeira would be ideal.

Interlaken is the gateway for Alpine skydiving and mountain trekking while Madeira (the one I’m yet to visit!) is a hiker’s dream defined by its lush trails and pristine air.

Add Lucerne, a cute town base that makes mountain exploration easy and accessible.

Culture And History

For a trip back in time, Vienna and Istanbul offer the most immersive experiences. Vienna is a treasure trove of classical music and history and surprisingly fun for kids.

Istanbul provides a colorful energy unlike any other European city, complete with grand bazaars and historic architecture.

Barcelona, Seville and the wider Andalusia region are also perfect to explore Catalan culture and Moorish architecture. Florence or Venice also make a perfect combination of history and culture.

Iconic Coastal And Island Summers

When you want the classic “European Summer” lifestyle, the French Riviera, Mallorca, Amalfi Coast and the Greek Islands are unbeatable.

The French Riviera is perfect for long stays split between coastal towns like Antibes and farm markets in Provence.

Mallorca is awesome with hidden coves and island-hopping to Menorca or Ibiza, while the Greek Islands offer everything from the white and blue domes of Santorini, Mykonos to the more authentic, laid-back charm of Naxos, Paros and Crete.

Of course, I can’t forget Sardinia – the island of crystal clear waters and relaxing beaches.

The Slow Life With Wine

For those moments where you just want to slow down and indulge, Tuscany and the Douro Valley are perfect AND wine lover’s paradise of rolling vineyards and world-class hospitality.

Finally, Costa Brava would be awesome for those slow rugged coastal days.

Whatever Euro summer destination you choose, you will end up having the time of your life!
